Yea's Best Kept Secret

Sign: Welcome to the Yea WetlandsThe ephemeral Yea Wetlands are situated on 32ha of crown land between two branches of the Yea River. The Goulburn Valley Highway splits the area into two. The Murrindindi Council formed and appointed the Yea Wetlands Committee of Management (as a S86 Committee) to manage the wetlands in September 2000.

Since that time this enthusiastic community has attracted funding and in-kind support to plan and implement some $0.65m of improvements to the environmental and social values of the wetlands; thereby delivering ecological, social and economic benefits to the environment and community.

In late 2004 the Trust was registered as an environmental organisation and granted Deductible Gift Recipient status.

The Committee was presented a United Nations Association of Australia, World Environment Day Award 2006 – Best Community Group. This award aptly recognised the tremendous amount of enthusiasm and work put in by the community to making, developing and publicising Yea’s wetlands as “Yea’s Best Kept Secret”.
